I've been putting several hours in this (i'm a persistent one), but ashamed as i am, i'm looking for some specialist help. I've read a lot of similar topics on fora, but none could offer me the answer.
My X-Fi has the "intel standard" HD audio connector (10 pins, no pin at 8), and my antec front panel cable has one plug with the ten wires, and the ten wires seperate as well.
At first i connected the complete plug to the x-fi connector, and tested it out. The sound from the rear works just fine (and sounds pretty good), but there are some weird things going on with the front panel (
windows detects the headphone when it's not there, and vice versa, things like that).
So i figured something must be wrong with the wires, the X-fi connector must have a different order than the front panel cable or something. So i started to look up the wiring maps.
The X-Fi's:
1. Port1L
2. GND
3. Port1R
4. /
5. Port2R
6. Sense1 return
7. /
8. /
9. Port2L
10. Sense2 return
The front panel cables have different labels, and it took me some time, and
i'm still not sure i've got it right. This is the order i think is right:
1. Mic
2. GND
3. Mic Bias
4. /
5. FPout R
6. Ret R
7. /
8. /
9. FPout L
10. Ret L
And this is what happens in windows (Vista) in the control panel\sound window:
Nothing plugged in the front panel:
Headphones: not plugged in (ok)
Microphone FP: working (but it's not plugged in!)
When i plug my headphone in the mic port:
Headphones: working (but it doesn't play nor record)
Microphone: working (but it doesn't)
When i plug my headphone in the headphone port:
Headphones: not plugged in (but it is! no sound)
Microphone: not plugged in (ok)
When i change the position of the wires to something else, this behaviour changes ...
Oh yeah, of course my headphone itself is working nicely

My headphone works nicely as microphone as well ...
I'm looking for some help specific to my case, i.e. i hope someone can tell me if i'm "translating" the wire names correctly, or if i'm missing something.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
