WindowsXP doesn't start with 6200

I'm new to the game, hope anyone out there can help me...

I have bought a GeForce 6200 PCI from Club 3d, and installed it on my Dell Dimension 2400, which has an onboard graphic card (Intel 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller).

I've downloaded and installed the latest nVidia Drivers, and the NVIDIA GeForce 6200 shows up under Display in the Device Manager.

The PROBLEM: When computer starts up, connected to the 6200 VGA port, it seems fine at first, but when Windows (XP) starts loading, the screen goes blank (not pitch black as when I disconnect the display, but more "blackish").

I'm forced to reboot and go to Setup, select "onboard" video controller instead of "auto" (which is supposed to use the added in 6200 card), and then reconnect the VGA-cable to my onboard graphic card.

I have tried
1. Disabling the Intel card in Device Manager (=same procedure as above, but with very "basic" display resolution)
2. Install up-to-date, NVIDIA-drivers, reboot with onboard card, reboot again switching switching to "auto" (added) graphic card, but it doesn't work; as soon as XP is about to start, the screen goes blank

If you've experienced this problem, plz let me know!

Did you disable the onboard video controller from BIOS?

It's not possible to disable the onboard video controller from BIOS, I only have the options of setting controller to "Auto" (selects added graphic cards), or "Onboard" (selects the integrated Intel card)

I don't know what kind of bios settings/options you got, but try the following:

"Primary Graphics Adapter": switch to pci if possible;

"Primary VGA Bios": switch to pci vga bios/card if possible;

"Assign IRQ For VGA": switch to "enabled" if possible (IRQ is assigned to the graphics card).

The names for the options in the bios of your motherboard may be a little different, try to find similar settings/options in the bios of your motherboard.

Try those tricks what tcman recommended. And just a question do your mobo have AGP slot?
I've bumped Compaq's desktop with same chipset and it had AGP slot and when the slot was in use the onboard chip was disabled automatically.

Ok, now I've solved the problem!
But like I said, I'm new to this, so my solution is - I think - too obvious...

I wasn't able to follow any of tcmans recommendations (but thanks a bunch for the helpfulness), since my Setup/BIOS doesn't have those options. The Dell Dimension 2400 only have PCI slots.

Instead I uninstalled the nvidia driveres, (physically) removed the graphic card and uninstalled the onboard graphic card. Having done that I restarted, went to Setup, chose "Auto" for Video Controller, went back to restart process and turned power off before xp begun to load.

Next step was to put the graphic card (6200) in place and power on the computer. Without neither added nor onboard graphic card, the screen is painful to watch, but at least I managed to install nvidia drivers (which I had already downloaded). After reboot, XP was detected and the process continued beyond the "crucial point" where it had earlier failed.

In short: uninstall onboard graphic card, set video controller to "auto" in BIOS, and then put the added card in place + install drivers.

Well I'm happy as a 4-year-old in a candy shop now...
