ati2mtag: "CRT invalid display type"
Hello all, my first post here and hoping somebody has seen and/or fixed this glitch before.
I'm running WinXP Pro, SP2.
Omega Drivers v3.8.421 (I un-installed all of the original ATI AIW drivers before installing Omega drivers)
Video Card = ATI Radeon 9800 Pro AIW
Under Event Browser I get this error roughly every 3 minutes under System errors: "ati2mtag, EventID 45062 - CRT invalid display type"
Not really sure since i'm using an LCD monitor why any software or drivers on my PC are telling Windows it's a CRT. Any ideas??

Welcome to DH.
Perhaps the display is sending invalid EDID data to the system and the ATI driver has trouble deciphering it.
Please explain how the LCD is connected? DVI, VGA, etc And list the make and model of the LCD.
Thanks

If you want to disable the error messages, set both values under the following key to "0":
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Atierecord

Windows XP Home Edition SP2
Radeon X700 Pro
19" Wide-screen LCD Monitor
I get the same error also, I know it's a problem with the ATI Driver from v7.7 and beyond (I'm running v8.3). My computer reboots every time I try to load a saved TES: Oblivion file, then I get the 'Windows has encountered a serious error...', then I check the event log and it shows the Invalid Display type error at the exact moment my computer restarted. I'm looking into getting an Omega driver to solve the problem but if Sduibek has it after installing the driver then what good will it do me?

Omega uses the same core drivers as the ATI set. I would be surprised if it made any difference.
The eventlog message is coming from the main ati driver component. I am trying to get a better explanation for exactly what it means. It could be a bug in the driver, but could also be the driver simply reporting something that it considers strange.
I do not think the message is actually damaging so you can disable it if it bothers you.

Same here -- been getting "crt invalid display type" since around 7.7 or so as well. I get one logged in system log for every boot or resume from standby. It's harmless though, just a little annoying.

It appears as though this message is related to how the display is connected to the graphics controller. Meaning is a CRT detected on CRTC 1 or 2 or is component video in use rather than a CRT meaning VGA connection. Any other condition results in an error.
So the display connection becomes important in understanding the issue. I suspect everyone is using a VGA connection? No matter if they have an LCD or CRT.
The display make and model is likely also important.
Anyway, it is reported as the driver initializes like on a system start or return from standby. Also this would happen after the "SERIOUS ERROR" condition mentioned above because the display driver is initializing.
There is no reason to suspect the the INVALID DISPLAY message is actually causing a crash or problem. Nor is it related.
It is an annoying red herring. It occurs after the 7.7 driver because that is when the error reporting code was added to the driver. Therefore it is not a driver bug it is the driver logging what it considers an error condition.

I get this message with an LCD (model: Hanns.G HW191D) connected to the X800GTO's DVI port. That's what makes it so "weird"...
Anyway, thanks for getting back to us! The knowledge base article is a bit short on what is actually going on.
Since this error event started appearing with CAT 7.7, I have it removed by disabling the driver's eRecord feature with no issues so far *knock on wood*.

Are you using a DVI to VGA adapter to the panel?
Any chance there is another graphics adapter in the system? Maybe an integrated graphics part on the mobo?
Can you provide an MSINFO report?

Nope, it's DVI-to-DVI.

Nope, no onboard graphics. It's just one X800GTO connected via PCI-E.

FWIW, the error event appears on both XP SP2 and XP x64 SP2.
I'll remove the msinfo report for now. If you need it again or anything else, just let me know!

same error here.
x800 gto agp connected via VGA port to lcd 19" asus 193s.
the error itself it's not a problem but I can't use hl2 or hl2 ep1 cause the system restart itself.only a bsod without no error message.....
I think this error affects some application....too many guys with freeze or instability.
just formatted and cata 8.3 with CCC in use
the monitor is correctly detected in CCC but it is without INF file so windows xp recognizes it like a general plug and play

hi all,
i have the same problem. With the original ati driver was the same. I have a DELL notebook intalled with XP SP2.
I put this values to 0, but this doesn't help, because notebook reboots more time at startup. If you put this values to 0, just the error logging is 0, but the problem is not solved/fixed.
So other ideas?
Thnx.

And that is all this registry tweak is supposed to do: Suppressing the event from being logged.
If your notebook is still under warranty, maybe you should give Dell support a chance. Or open a new thread with a detailed problem and system description in:

I also have the same problem. I get this error somehow related to DirectX while loading the mission in Call of Duty 4. The game freezes.
I'm running Radeon 9500@9700 on Omega Drivers 4.8.442 (Catalyst 7.12).
I though it's maybe related to my recent display change (my CRT picked off so I was forced to switch to LCD) but it doesn't seem to be the cause at all.

Same here. I'm using Samsung SyncMaster 204B (LCD) - DVI only. Not using DVI-VGA, it's a DVI-DVI cord, using the DVI plugs on my Gfx card and monitor.
Other gfx? No.

Please if you can help me i'm not too expert about PC, but not a newbie too.
Please try to be more clear as possible ^^
Thanks and sorry if i made some grammar mistakes.
