Preliminary, 1st half of 2008. Which is vague but an RC2 coming out should be a good sign that it should not be delayed beyond that. I'm tempted to try this on my XP install, but I'll save it for some time when I'm really bored.

It has been 4 years since the SP2 was released, why not wait another month or two for the final version of SP3? What is so special about it (especially if you have the Windows Update enabled)?

Well, for people like me who may be installing a new system, be it for me or somebody else. Instead of having to wait 30 minutes or an hour to download updates I could just install everything at once and be done with it so I can go about my business.

Yes but all you have posted is a link to the RC2... for what i see is RoyBatty was referring to the Official SP3 release from Microsoft. (if i am mistaken please correct me)
The RC2 is still classed as Beta.

Nothing special, but it's good to have a (Legally) Hacked xp disk..I can try out betas without the activation problems that can happen.

Maybe it saves some time, but I just wouldn't install a potentially buggy pre-release software on my customer's system. And I wouldn't install it on my own system unless it fixes something I need fixed as soon as possible.
But for testing purposes it may be good
