exclamation Silverlight?

So I just noticed in Windows Update that there's a new bit defender defintion (like every week) and this other optional update

Microsoft Silverlight 1.0 (KB946609)

Download size: 1.8 MB

Update type: Optional

Microsoft Silverlight is a lightweight browser plug-in for Internet Explorer and Firefox that blends animation, audio/video, and interactivity to deliver richer Web site experiences.

Anything I should know about this? It's hard to find articles saying if it bugs firefox/ie or not... I'm a big firefox user so I dunno what the heck this could mean for me.

I have no idea. Can't you just back up what you have so that nothing gets damaged? On the other hand, if you don't know what it does exactly, perhaps you don't need it?

But I do hope companies would stop using the words deliver and richer for anything web related software they release.

As teme said, it's a multimedia plugin by MS Microsoft Silverlight: Light Up the Web

It's actually very good, the video encoding etc is great, but you won't find many sites that use it.

Sounds like you have eye on it Craig I've seen some videos on it and they all have been a bit better than flash videos (VP6 codec).

Silverlight's got a long way to go before it competes with flash. It needs to work on more browsers on more OS's. Until then, adoption won't happen. No one wants to make their website work for only windows users or only IE users.

I guess things have changed a bit then. I can still find sites that work if not only, then better with IE than any other one.
I still can't make yahoo music videos, or any of their videos that lunch a new window for the playback to work with Opera.

Pretty much, as is, Silverlight is real neat technically, but useless to the (minority) of users who don't use Windows/IE.

Support's been planned for non IE browsers for 6+ months now...

Well, I don't know about Vista Opera, but under XP I haven't managed to make it work.

Has anyone been able to get this to work under FF in XP? I only see the Get MS Silverlight button. Silverlight works fine in IE7 of course.
