Yeah, we are fixing that now. something went wrong with our code.
Anyway as Craig said with regards to a lot of the feedback in this thread, we are moving on some good front page changes based on comments.
Hopefully it will make the front page a better place for everyone. Not sure of any exact ETA's but hopefully sooner rather than later.

The front page layout has changed from your feedback everyone. There are still a few more things to be altered however, hopefully its a step in the right direction.

Just a little bug, the last item doesn't fit in the frame:
(Firefox 2.0.0.12)

most strange, i just tested with the same version and its perfectly fine here. I notice the spacing (leading) between your type is greater which is doing this. No idea what is happening

All's working perfectly fine and well in Firefox 2, perhaps that's a subtle hint?

OK, maybe it's displayed wrong only in Linux.

it may be you have the font set a size larger in firefox Roy, try setting the fonts to default.
View/Text Size/Normal.

It didn't help (I never used that option before since I've been using Firefox for just a few days). I tried to decrease the text size and I noticed the "New search powers lead Firefox 3" item in the Technology news which is not visible at all (except a few pixels) with text size set to Normal.
And the text size is reset to Normal after I close the tab, so I don't think this is the cause.

Sorry Roy, it must be the different spacing under linux firefox then. if you look at your image and my image you can see the spacing between the items in the bottom panel is more than mine which is forcing it outside the panel. You can also see in the panel above your issue, you don't even have a "read more", as the spacing is even different there and that review column is also being forced beyond the panel dimensions, however it is not overflowing, it is just vanishing and omitting the last line of text.
I have tested it in IE7, Firefox 2 and Opera as well as Safari on three machines at home. One running XP, Vista 32 and the last on Vista 64 bit. Its all showing fine. I also tested it on OS X Safari on the macintosh and it looks ok. If there are any other browsers you can try on Linux I would be curious to see how they work (I don't have linux installed on any machine right now to test myself).
Must be a linux spacing difference within Firefox, the only problem is if we adjust the spacing for linux firefox then all the other browsers will be out.
Unless Craig knows some fancy coding techniques I don't see anything we can do.

idk if it has been addressed before (i haven't read all posts on this now 9 page thread), but will there be a "new posts" and "user CP" link on the main page? it would be nice if it were a drop down underneath the "forum" link at the top of the page

I just downloaded Opera (latest 9.26) and it looks the same as in Firefox. It seems to be some system-wide Linux (or at least Xubuntu 7.10) problem...
Here is a screenshot (I didn't find how to disable the ad-blocker):

The idea was to keep the forum seperate from the front page, that was intentional. There are plenty of people who don't participate on the forum who read the front page and we would need to start coding in variables for members/signed in etc.
I know you guys are maybe used to the old system, but there are really very few tech sites that allow forum facilities on a non forum front page. such as hardocp etc.
I really don't think this is needed. my thinking is that the ideal place to check messages etc is actually on the forum, not a front page.

Thanks Roy, again this is interesting because this browser seems to have kept the leading (spacing) between the lines in relation to linux firefox, but while firefox pushes it outside the panel Opera is just shoving it out of sight. Interestingly Opera on all versions of Windows displays it perfectly fine.
I also see the reviews panel is just cutting off the last line, in fact the whole spacing of that panel is off entirely and its cutting the image as well. I will chat to Craig about this tomorrow, not sure what we can do, if anything. It could actually be a setting in your linux OS is doing it that we aren't aware of.
What distro are you using? is there any one else who can try any linux distros?

This was happening only when I took the first screenshot, I don't know why but now it's displayed "the Opera way" in both browsers (and it was like that before I installed Opera, so Opera didn't affect it).

I'm using Xubuntu 7.10 and I have Kubuntu and Sabayon Live DVD's, I'll try them and post back.

Ubuntu 7.10 installation, no custom fonts. Only the spacing seems to be off.
I'll give it a spin and install windows fonts to see what it does to the site.

Thanks for testing for us peter. It does indeed look to be a linux specific spacing difference.
Hard to know what we do now, but il definitely see if we can fix whatever is different.

Installed the Win fonts on my Ubuntu box (can't give instructions as it breaks several EULAs and more - just google/Ubuntuforum it) and the spacing issue is gone. The site looks 100% the same as it does in windows, using both Opera and Firefox.

I installed the two packages using Synaptic, cleared the browser cache and rebooted but it's the same as before. Do I have to do something else to make it work?

Little update, massively puzzled now. Still got no ads, getting partial stories in both columns, shown as little dots and sometimes half a line.
Hoping someone can help with the ad issue, i'm getting the tabula rasa picture and the graphics card review picture but just placeholders for ads....so whats the difference between the two image types. Bearing in mind I have zero knowledge of website programming.
Things i've tried.....cleared cache, using ie option and manually including deleting all cookies. No idea if this helps but re-installed java, shockwave, flash player, quicktime and all updates. Finally I have no other add-ons installed ie tune-ups or ad-blockers.
I'm at a loss . Normally wouldn't make an issue but I feel it's unfair to visit a site I enjoy 3 or 4 times a day without being able to help fund it in my own small way.

can confirm i'm seeing the same as Leli in both IE7 and newest opera, also i like the link to DH downloads instead of the join link, was wanderin about DH downloads the other day, glad to see its still available.
Z, concerning the forum activity area on the FP, are there any changes coming there or is that how it'll be for good?
EDIT. just noticed, when in a forum and try to use the search forum button in the top right, when it drops down the flash ad(Zotac) stays infront of the search box.

The fonts I installed are not normaly part of the repositories. There is some jumping through hoops to get them up and running.
