Please help

Hi I was recommend to you guys and I’m hoping that someone here can help me. I just purchased a new laptop that’s running Vista premium, here is a link for the specs;

The problem that I’m having is that when I plug anything, such as my line 6 pod xt live or even my iPod with a 1/8 jack, I can’t get any live sound out of my speakers or through the headphone port. I have talked with Toshiba and they said that they don’t think that I can do that with Vista. I had no problems doing this with XP on my last pc. Now, I know that my input is working because I can record my iPod(I’m tired of strumming my guitar at this point) through the input and play it back, I just can’t hear it in real time. I have posted this problem on numerous message boards and many people have suggested that I come here and ask you guys for help. I have been working with some people on another Vista forum where we have tried to work out this problem. Here is a link to that ongoing post need help with audio - Vista Forums , I’m hoping that you could read that before you ask me to make sure that I check the properties etc… I have spent all of my free time for the last 4 days trying to get this worked out and am at my wits end. Hopefully someone here can help me. Thanks!

Hi there and welcome to DriverHeaven!

So if I got it straight you want to play music from your iPod thought your laptop to speakers connected to it? I think that's not going to work. Since you got one microphone in (mono) and you would connect the source to that then you would have to go from stereo sound to mono that makes the quality go down a bit. The easiest way for you is to connect the iPod to external speakers directly if you can. It's much easier to do. But if you want to do it that way you would need external sound card or one that uses ExpressCard slot in your laptop.

Not only my iPod but also my guitar, so that I can play along with Guitar-Pro and hear myself in real time. I want to be able to do this through my laptop like I could with my last laptop running xp. Please read the link that I included with my first post.

the ability to hear input in real-time depends entirely on the drivers for your soundcard - if there is a way to do this with your particular device, then the option will lie somewhere within the soundcard's driver software/control panel

if you could be a little more detailed about the soundcard you have, then we may be able to assist you finding an updated driver for the card which may solve the problem

if it turns out there is no way to do this, then you have two options - buy an external soundcard that does support direct monitoring (preferable one with a high impedence (hi-z) input designed for guitars, otherwise it'll just sound sh*tty), or a desk mixer like the soundcraft compact 4 which allows you to hear in real-time what is going through the mixer (it also has a hi-z input for a guitar)

I'm not sure what sound driver I have. Here is a link to the pc that I just bought Laptop Computers - Satellite X205-S9800 click on detailed specs and hopefully it will be there. I'm not very good with computers, thats why I came to you guys for help

I did read that link and did some digging in the web. And there is no way that you can do that with your current laptop without some external sound card.

Ok, then could someone please explain to me how an external sound card works?
