Default Post Vista SP1 early reflections

I've been sick as a dog with flu for a couple of days so I had time to spare, like lying on the bed waiting for SP1 to install. That sure took a while, using the full package on a freshly installed Vista x64. Anyway here are a couple of things I've noticed over a few days use. Add your own to this thread if you notice some perticular change. Please no questions about how to obtain any files here.

Good things:
  1. Kernel memory leak when copying tens of thousands of files in one go is gone. There was an unsupported hotfix that one could get after applying for it but it's nice to see it's finally been dealt with properly.
  2. Readyboost is now usable. Edit: Strike that, while it doesn't hurt gaming performance I do get sound hickups/cutouts sometimes with Readyboost on. Previously I would experience a loss of performance in some games with Readyboost activated, but now I can finally let this fast Corsair memory stick do some work even though the system has 3GB RAM. I wouldn't be surprised if this indicates a little better Readyboost performance on most systems.
  3. According to the Vista performance rating memory speed is up from 4.9 to 5.9 on this system. Though I have no way to tell if it was only the method of measurement that was changed, improved memory performance could possibly be the reason as to why some system parts of Vista is a little bit snappier on overall as well.
  4. Trusted Installer has not started hogging a CPU core for a moment at every startup like it used to. Likely an improvement or bugfix to the Windows Update routine.
Not so good:
  1. The bug where the explorer randomly introduces a different view to a random folder is still there. It took a couple of days for it to appear so I almost expected it to be gone.

Sigh, to deal with this I've ended up customizing every folder view to be identical, so their whole premise is totally useless. You'd think something as obvious as this would be an easy fix.

I've got my Vista DVD with SP1 preintegrated ready to go, am going to wipe clean and reinstall for the first time since January '07 when I get some free time.

If you open up my computer and set the view there, it takes care of most cases of the folder views not being right. I still have an odd folder here or there where the "group by" option somehow got set though...

I don't think it makes a whole lot of difference, SP1 includes a cleaner tool (Vsp1cln.exe) to remove older files, and the online setup is more convenient for most home users.

System builders are going to have access to DVDs with SP1 preintegrated, so there's no need to slipstream anything.

Sigh...I was really hoping they would fix this...its not a deal breaker but it is annoying as hell.

Hopefully, the transfer rate between disks has been sorted. I transferred a 4.2Gb ISO from one drive to another today at the whopping speed of 18 Mb/s...yep 18!

wtf al vampyre...

the only issues i've experienced.. and it's occured on xp as well.. is that occasionally my usb flash drive appears to be performing horribly (2.5mb/s on usb2.0 interface)... but it's only once in a blue moon..

inside vista.... i can transfer from disc to disc at thier full rated speed.. i've yet to see a case where it hasn't.

Hey, quick question to anyone running SP1: Are you able to edit DEP settings through the System > Performance Options GUI, or do you have to use bcdedit.exe?

Yes Zelig, those DEP controls behave like normal here. If everything is grayed out for you then have a look at group policy settings perhaps.

Okay, good to know. It's probably vlite that affected it, I assumed it would just change the default settings for DEP, not lock it so that I wouldn't be able to change it anymore...

Strange, I don't think so, and the size is a lot smaller than the one I DL'd.

Oh, the size is 120-700MB, it's variable.

That is very strange though, I don't think there has been anything officially announced, unless it came late last evening.

Only my Vista Ultimate x64 box is showing SP1 as available in Windows Update. My Vista Home Premium machines (x64 on secondary desktop, 32-bit on laptop) do not show it as available. I hope this isn't the new benefit of having Ultimate edition installed in place of the lacking Extras...
