32bit or 64bit?

that is my dilemna

as i mentioned elsewhere on the site, in a couple of weeks i'll be getting a brand new mac pro - which via bootcamp, supports both 32 and 64bit versions of vista, which i'm assuming means there are both 32/64 bit drivers for all devices built in to the mac

i'm just wondering whether it's worth installing the 64bit version of Vista over the 32bit version

Yes, functionally there isn't a whole lot of difference to the end-user any more, but you need the 64-bit version for support for the full 4gb of ram.

With the 32-bit version, you'll likely have somewhere between 2.5-3.5gb of ram available.

Looks like Boot Camp 2.0 only supports 32bit versions of Windows (XP or Vista) unless they have updated recently - disappointing...

the restore discs that come with the new mac pros allow for 64 bit vista, which is what prompted me to think about it - but i might hold off, as some of my external devices won't work, neither will MacDrive

From what I remember TransMac has x64 support.

Come to think of it, this has been something of an issue for a long time now.. for almost 2 years as a matter of fact. 2 years later, and still no x64 support.

So how does Vista 64bit perform these days, comparing to 32 bit, eg. in games.

Well games that use 64bit... IE Crisis run a whole lot better in comparison

I agree with the x64 fans. People claim there are issues with driver support, but I have not seen any issues with drivers. All my games run fine, some even better than with XP or Vista x32.

don't have any real driver issues with x64 ... only thing that I could think of is my Logitech Webcam which I had to end up selling because Logitech "does not feel it is necessary to update its drivers for Vista x64 support" on "such an old webcam"

Webcam came out 3 months after vista did

the 64bit DVD arrived for Vista Home Premium yesterday, will probably run both it and Vista 32 for a while (at least until macdrive has a 64bit version, all but my vista disks are in the Mac HFS+ format)
Another thing, I'm not too hopeful that there are going to be 64bit drivers for my audio interface any time soon (damn digidesign)

i *did* install vista x64 ultimate (without entering a CD key) and all the apple drivers for my system worked perfectly during the short time i tested it

swimtech: iirc i think i've read that the same drivers will work in the new Al iMacs, probably due to the HD2600 card that's in both the (stock) mac pro and the new iMacs, but i can't say I've seen any results of anyone trying it on a macbook - PM if you'd like me to send over the x64 drivers if you want to try

Did a little research from my end - 64bit currently only supported on your machine, maybe the new Penryn MacBook Pro - so there might be some hope for me in that as the hardware hasn't changed much at all. Your MacPro is so different from my original MacBook Pro the drivers wouldn't be much good to me, but thanks for the offer.

I have a peer looking into this further for both of us - he has a MacBook Pro too. I'll let you know.
