GH Review: Everquest 2: Rise of Kunark

I don’t know about the rest of you guys, but MMOs tend to have a very strange effect on me. When starting a new title I literally get sucked into them, spending hours upon hours of my free time just exploring, leveling up and having fun. But after a few weeks of playing something happens. I’m not entirely sure where things go awry, but sooner or later I come to the startling realization that I’m not having fun anymore. This has happened to me with Star Wars Galaxies, Vanguard and even World of Warcraft. But not with Everquest 2. Granted, I don’t play it constantly and often take entire months off it. But with SOE pushing out a new expansion every few months (at least it feels this way) I can’t help but being drawn back in to experience all the fresh content. The question is how long they can keep doing this – after all doing the same thing over and over again inevitably loses its pull.

Can you tell me more about the crafting changes? I played EQ2 about 2 years ago, and I'm curious. (One day I might go back to it.)

Good work.

I've tried like heck to get into EQ II and it never works for me more than a few months. Something is missing and I am not sure what. I loved the original "Ruins of Kunark" expansion on EQ. I liked that game up to the Velious expansion then I started getting tired of it fast. When Planes of Power hit that pretty much did it for me.

I'd love to see the old Anarchy Online game simply redone with a new engine. I loved that game before Shadowlands.

I will agree with Blacklash on the first EQ game. Played that until PoP came out and after that, just got bored of sitting around waiting to pick up a group. The trade skills never seemed to be really worth the time to get up in skill so it was extremely boring sitting around. Pretty much quit after that. I've played a couple of MMO's since then, Dark Age, beta testing for Matrix Online and currently WoW but that's loosing my interest as well with everyone moving towards pvping and raiding (and then people thinking they can raid in pvp gear= irritating).

I did the EQ2 7 day trial when it first came out but I had a 9600 Pro at the time and it wasn't the smoothest game play by any means. Might go back and try it again now that I've got a little better machine.
