hi i recently saw on some websites that you can overclock you CPU through the bios...one prob...i dont know where in the bios to do this...can someone please post a reply on how to overclock the CPU and Memory?

It's different depending on whether you have an AMD or Intel CPU.

Please post your full system specification (mobo, cpu, cooling, ram, graphics, psu etc etc)if you would like further advice. Also include your OS in the specs.

Ok mobo: um came with a dell 4550 not particuarly sure which mobo it is
CPU: Intel P4 2.0 Ghz
Cooling: 2 fans one on CPU and case fan
RAM: 768 MB
Graphics: ATi Radeon X1050
PSU: 300 Watts
OS: Windows XP

Hi there,

Unfortunately you cannot Overclock that computer of yours, it is a Dell computer. While they do have a BIOS, it has no options for overclocking, and you would need to replace the motherboard if you wanted to do any sort of overclocking.

The main reason Dell does not allow any performance options in their BIOS is because if everyone was Overclocking them (which can cause stuff to malfunction, and sometimes damage components) they wouldn't be able to do Warranty work (OCing voids warranties) and they also wouldn't be able to tell you whats wrong with your computer when they do phone/email based tech support because they only know how the computer left their factory, and not how you changed settings of it.

And from a performance standpoint, there isnt much to gain from that system in Overclocking and you would be better off saving money, and upgrading to a new system rather than trying to get that system faster

Not a problem, if you do however decide to buy a new rig dont be afraid to make a thread asking for build criticism, or help after you receive it on Overclocking it.

I reckon that Dell should make one product within each of their lines for customers who may want to overclock where the BIOS isn't locked as there is probably a demand for it. I know it would probably be bad commercially but it would be nice for the consumer.

What you would end up with, is something similar to the original release of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution (8) in the US, or worse.

A gigantic disclosure you have to sign stating that if you mod, race or do anything along those lines, your warranty is void and you're SOL.


In the world of Bureaucratic BS, Dell doesn't produce that product, because someone would sue them over warranty claims, even with a signature or release of Dell's liability.

So, even WITH a release of that nature, Dell's headache, warranty claims and potential presence in various small claims courts around the country - wouldn't make it worth while.
