So you mean the PS3 is future proof as far as blu ray support is concerned?

I dont think that is correct. The 360 upconverts games when you select above 720p but movies play in true 1080p... or at least they appear to on my system when i connect the drive to my PC or to the 360 (Elite).
As for the usb connection used, HD-DVD movies can transfer video at 30mb/s and audio at up to 27mb/s depending on which type you use. USB 2.0 has a max throughput of 480mb/s so there is plenty bandwidth spare on the HD-DVD drive.
Also just wanted to say in response to the original post i have no probs with audio on my TV via HDMI.

Yeah it is. I think they were demoing the BD live feature on a PS3 at CES along with some prototype blu ray players.

you can buy a combo PC drive for about $50 more than the price of the 360 add-on. At least in Canada. I've heard it is quite a bit more in the USA though.

I think the 360 may do the upconverting but I'm not sure. It seems like if it could do it with that player it should be able to do that with all the games also.
I'd say its worth checking the image quality between an HD-DVD player that supports full 1080P and compare it with the 360 HD-DVD player.

I've run some comparisons and the 360 is passing through the full 1080p content. 300 for example is identical on both blu-ray and hd-dvd. (as identical as possible when using the 360 for one and my PC for the other).
