8800GT vs. GTS/GTX

I've got a friend that still believes the GTS is more powerful than the GT despite the fact that the GT is literally a hair away from the GTX in terms of performance.
He's got a budget of about £200, which is best for him?
The GT
The GTS
or the GTX?

unless you can lend him the difference for the 512MB GT

and, if worded correctly, your friend is right. the GTS is more powerful than the GT .

The old 8800GTS (G80 based) is slower than the 8800GT. However, the new 8800GTS (G92 based) is faster than the GT.

So he is both right and wrong, he would need to specify what version.

And if he is going to buy an 8800GT make sure its the 512mb edition, because the 256mb is simply not enough for todays games.

If he can find the extra £11 then this may be a better option for future games:

the G92 8800GTS is the best thing you can buy at this time man....

if he was thinking G92 then he got it right

but if he got the older 320 and 640mb as the most powerful.... bring him to us....

How much more powerful is the G92 core against the G80?

well, considering that the g92 based GTS is just a hair slower than the GTX, i'd say it's a very good performing card for considerably less money!

well.... it beats the GTX in most resolutions without any high amounts of AA or AF, but once you layer those on. the bandwidth problem takes a toll on the G92 vs GTX and Ultra

then those two others excel.

if you compare the G80 GTS, that thing doesnt even register

Even then, the GTX only really pulls ahead at 1920x1200 and above in most games.

However, if someone buys an 8800 GTX to game at 1024x768, they've got weird priorities.

For $100 more, one could get a cheap 1920x1200 LCD and an 8800 GT.

To me, that's weird priorities, I'd much rather have a more usable desktop and slower games than a cramped desktop and speedy games.

Truthfully I'd buy a 350 card first and use it with the moniter I already have then upgrade when its good for me. As of right now 1440x900 is all I use for my current specs but I can't spend another 250-300 on a good moniter and especially lcd screens, I would not want a cheap one to go with a GT or GTS no matter what the resolution on it.

My desktop is perfectly usable and its a well optimized resolution that runs crysis over 30fps at all times on high

i've just put a accelero s1 + turbo module on my 8800GT plus i added a system exhaust fan in a pci slot and put a 120mm fan on my case window. Add all that to the fact i have an antec 900 case with 4 fans already in it an i have one seriouslyy cooled pc. now my card is constantly overclocked at 750/1750/2050 and runs at 36c idle and 45 under full load

8800GT + aftermarket cooling = £195
