What's your opinion of the ipod Touch?
Any owners or soon to be owners of the Apple iPod Touch 8gig/16gig?
Why did you buy one or why won't you?

The reasons I don't buy one.
1)Not close to the best sound quality.
2)From what I heard (though not so sure), you have to use itunes and the files can't be only mp3s and ogg.
3)expensive
4)I am very satisfied with my walkman phone (w810i).
5)If I would buy a large mp3 player it would be one that could hold at least 20GB, play ogg and mp3 natively, be as small as possible, and without a touch screen.
6)No touch screen cause they get dirty too fast.
7)It looks very fragile.
8)I don't like all the hype and attitude surrounding ipods and the fans just annoy me.
9)To add later if I remember.

Good list, BlueMak. I agree with most of those points but I try to be realistic and compare it to other products.
Arkos 605/705: up to 160gig with huge 800 width res but is bulky, lower quality picture, is a scam (you need to pay to enable many of the features which costs over $100).
Creative Video: lots of space but is bulky, no internet.
Zune 2: Not sold outside USA. Screw Microsoft.
I like the slimness of the Touch because unlike other multimedia devices it is light and small enough to put on an armband, the touch screen is scratchproof (saw it tested on youtube), sound is good enough but not great, and internet. INTERNET. I saw vids where people even used IM programs with the touch I think that's pretty sweet.
The trendiness and treacherous practices of Apple bother me, they refuse to give all the features people want and release new ipods periodically to keep the buzz going. It is likely within 6 months a better Touch will come out with more space and features and I'll feel like a fool
Despite that, I'm leaning towards getting an Ipod touch.

Tonight I've been reading about this so called "jailbreaking" which allows you to install programs and games, while it voids the warranty you can format the touch back to factory default and no one will ever know.
That sounds pretty cool and makes the touch more appealing than it otherwise would be

Not sure exactly, but you can install some of the apps which were in the iPhone, 3rd party stuff and games (like Nintendo roms).

There are 3 things i look for in a media device...
1) Good sound quality
2) Flexibility... can i use whatever format or media player i want on the PC the device will sync with?
3) Has as much space as possible so that i can put all of my media on there without having to chop and change every day.
The ipod is average on item 1, awful on item 2 and really not great on item 3. Yes it looks nice, is cool to see in action and has some nice wifi related features but the BASIC functionality of the device, the functionality I would use most, just cant compete with devices from Archos and Creative.

I've had an 8 gig ipod touch since mid September and I enjoy mine quite a bit. The wifi and browser work like a charm (kinda neat to zoom in/out with a pinch of my fingers), the sound quality is fine with me, and the TV shows I get from the itunes store look and sound great. I did't get the 16 gig version because I thought 400$ was a bit stiff.

My Sandisk Sansa E260 arrived on the 18th yesterday, 4 days earlier than the estimated delivery date and i am extremely impressed with it.
Someone in my IT class at school has a touch and imo it's ridiculous, why would you pay $300 for an extremely breakable MP3 player that does stuff when you prod it?
I'd take my Sansa over a 16gb touch anyday

I can't justify the $400 either and if I get it, it'll be the 8gig. How has the battery life and heat produced by the touch been?

The e260's ability to handle video stands in contrast to the iPod nano, but playback is limited to 15 fps and all videos have to be converted using SanDisk's bundled app before transfer
|
I could never watch movies and tv shows at 15 fps, plus the Sansa has no internet (and a small screen). It's probably great for music but that's not the idea behind the touch (it can't compete with the ipod classic's sound or capacity).

all three of my close friends feel that the idea is good, the price is bad and there are other alternatives. I think if another company put this toy on the market it would have failed or remain on the shelf during christmas. But put "I" anything on it and it is instantly overhyped. I personally dont have one.

It's an MP3 player for god's sake what do you want the internet for?
I don't bother using the video function on the Sansa since i'm normally being cracked at with a whip to do my work in class so i just listen to my music instead.
And the small screen? Christ can you get any more picky >_>

That's like saying it's a phone why do you need a camera, mp3, internet and sms?
I already have a Sony Sports Mp3 player but I'd love to have a compact and light player which can do multimedia and the internet is just one huge bonus. Mousey, you do realize there are a lot of multimedia players like Arkos, Zune, Creative? People want to have a big screen to enjoy tv and movies anywhere.

Battery life IMO is pretty good. I used it all day every day when I went on vacation and was never worried about running out of battery, and that was a mix of wifi, music and TV shows. The only issue I had was one day the unit got really hot and I saw the battery draining before my eyes, I rebooted it and it was fine, and it hasn't happened since.
In comparison I also have a Dell Axim x50v, and it's a turd compared to the Touch. The browser on the Dell is flaky, mp3 playback was fine, and I had no time to rip and convert movies to play on it. The Axim is currently boxed up and ready for auction.

it fails big time for me in just one key area. the fecking price.
it costs an arm and a leg. you can buy my current mobile for not too much more than a touch on payg, with touchscreen, intraweb, 5mp camera, and infinately expandable via transflash which doesn't eat battery life for breakfast. other than just showing it off to your contemporaries at school/college whatever, I see no reason at all for buying a touch
if you must have an ipod, buy a classic and then get a decent 3G phone

I thought you were supposed to listen to music on your MP3 Player not browse porn (would be pretty nifty though )

One thing that sucks about the 8gig Touch is there's actually only 7 gig usable, the rest is taken up by the OS and other programs. That sure doesn't leave much room for mp3, movies, tv shows...oh who am I kidding, it'll be packed with porn

Right now I have 530 songs on mine, as well as 8 TV shows, and still have 1 gig left. I keep my favorites on the touch, and everything on my 30gig ipod.

Thread moved to the appropraite forum.
I'm honestly not that impressed by it. Seems like more of a gimmick. Maybe if there was more storage, but I feel the price/value needs to improve before I would even consider it.

My roommate had one for a few months before ending up selling it. It really is a nice ipod. The interface is great, I love Safari on it. Sure beats every other mobile browser I've used. But I do not think it is worth the price also. For only $100 more you can get an iPhone which has a lot more functionality (yes yes i know not in Canada yet). I would much rather wait for a next generation iPhone than buy a Touch at the moment.

And what's with all the brickings caused by firmware updates?
Imo Apple have gone down a very steep hill with the new ipods and iphones, just like MS did with vista.
It's probably to do with rushing to get everything out without being perfected to keep the hype public
