Need some help with 7800 GT
Hi everyone,
Thanks for looking and for the help in advance. I've been having some issues with my drivers for this card lately. I was getting some lines on my BIOS boot screen that looked like this llll llll llll llll. They would be in colums all over the screen. I can get into windows through safe mode. This happend before and the forms on the eVGA site they told me to run a driver cleaner, and it worked... for about 4 days, then now it's doing it all over again. I purchased the driver cleaner off this site and I figured I would come here to see if anyone of you had any suggestions. When I run the driver cleaner it says this:
<<<< nVidia >>>>
Registry Deleted HKEYLOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Ro ot\LEGACY_NVSVC
Registry Deleted HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\Root\ LEGACY_NVSVC
Registry Deleted HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Enum\Root\ LEGANCY_NVSVC
It says this every time I run the Driver Cleaner.NET
I hope you can help me. Thanks for reading.

Welcome to DH!
If you're getting problems while the computer is posting (BIOS boot screen), its not a driver issue. Video drivers aren't loaded untill Windows loads. It might be a hardware problem.
Can you get the computer to load Windows? Are you seeing graphics corruption while Windows in loaded/games are running/ etc? What sort of errors are you getting? If you can, post some screenshots of the problem. Imageshack.us can be used to host the screenshots.

If I run the computer in safe mode, then restart it I can get into windows without any artifacts. I had a friend run this card on his system and he said it ran fine. So it's something isolated to this system.
I don't know if this helps but, it all started after I tried a Crysis Demo. Since then it hasn't been the same.

Do you OC your system at all? Artifacting at Post typically mean bad video memory. Boot into windows and run a 3d app like a game or something. See if you get artifacts.

Try running Passmark BurnIn Test. I ahven't used it in a while but it used to have all kinds of test for the system and video card. Give it a shot, and also try running some games to see how bad the artifacting is.

I ran the program and failed. I can't run any games because I have no drivers. And when I do load drivers, the computer us rebooted in the middle of the process, I'm think I just need to format and just reinstall XP. Thanks for all your help and taking the time to reply. I can't figure it out. got anymore ideas?

Have you tried running a boot-time run of Linux? You can check out Ubuntu and load the OS without actually installing it. If you are still getting problems, this might be a good indication if your problem is with your hardware or software.
If you can't get any further, a reformat might be in order. But my gut tells me this is a hardware problem.

I tried what you told me, not working for me. I can load into windows with no artifacts. the artifacts only show up ant the post screen and the windows loading screen. But at the profile screen it looks fine. the only problem is that it's like I have no video card. When I log in the hardware wizard pops up and asks me if I would like to install the new hardware. I was finally able to install drivers. 169.09 I think, whatever are the latest ones from nVidia. I't choppy when I scroll this page. I don't even know if it driver issue anymore. Maybe my card is fried. But I seen no artifacts when I'm logged into windows. I have no video on my mobo. I have a couple things in my device manager that are new. Says soming about like this:
? Other devices
? Other PCI Bridge Device
? PCI Memory Controller
? SM Bus Controller

Have you tried installing the chipset drivers?
Installing them should clear up the devices listed above, but I'm not sure if it will fix your problem with booting. If it doesn't fix your problem, it might not be the GPU, but the Motherboard. Give it a shot and post back.

here are a couple pics of what I am seeing. The Chipset drivers are what I needed for the Device Manager. But the screen is still bad. If it was the card would I always see the lines?

You wouldn't necessarily always see the lines. It seems like your card is dying man. If you have a friend and can borrow their card to pop it in and see what happens, that will confirm it. It could be something with your motherboard, but my guess is the card is dying. If you can RMA the thing, I'd set that up.

I like it, but I wished I'd held off a few weeks and picked up an 8800gtThat is without a doubt the best deal going now, but I got a pretty good deal on mine from a friend. You'll definetly be pleased with the upgrade.

I'm very greatfull for all your help. Even thought we couldn't get the problem solved, I fixed some other issues. My system has just gone to crap since I first tried to mess with that Crysis game. Sent my system into crysis and me trying to fix it has made it worse. Now it doesn't even shut off. just says "Windows is shutting down...". Nothing. And the restart button is not an option given when I go to the shutdown menu. Maybe need a whole new system. Christmas is around the corner hehe...

Glad to help. Your system is probably fine, I think your card is just dying. Replace it, and see what you get.
Then again, who doesn't like a new PC!
