G92 GPU upgrade path

Okay, so I've ordered and am patiently awaiting the arrival of my EVGA 8800 GT 512MB so that I can build my new system. I was just checking the EVGA website and they have something called a 90 day 'Step Up Program'. To participate you email or fax them your receipt, they validate and give you an RMA and once they have received your old card they send you an upgrade.

Of course you must pay the difference first lol.

So I was wondering when the GTX has the G92 I could upgrade within 90 days of having paid for the GT but wasn't 100% certain it is as simple as I have said above. Has anyone else used the Step Up Program? Am I right that EVGA would send me an new card upgrade from GT to GTX (or Ultra if I had the funds)? Does the program work well and efficiently?

It works well enough. All you have to do is pay the price difference to the new model within 90 days. There are some issues with it however, like evga taking some time to make the cards available for step up (just because a card was released doesn't mean it will immediately be available for step ups), and there is usually very limited availability for the first few of weeks. Also some cards you simply cannot step up to but usually the choices are pretty good.

So do they give you a list then of what is models are available for the step up?

Yup. Once you register your card -and you should quickly to activate the lifetime warranty- you can go in to your profile on the evga site and click on the step up option. Next page will have a drop down menu that will list all available upgrades. The process is just a few clicks and very easy

Cool. Thanks. That sounds like quite a good deal when you're on a tight budget. A good way to upgrade. I hadn't realised that EVGA offered this service when I ordered the GT and should have enough money in the new year for a GTX at least. (As long as christmas and alcohol doesn't make me forget myself.) Usually does lol.

I thought the next version of the G92 chip was to be the revised GTS, with the next mobile chip to be based on the G92, the 8800M GTX?

what i've heard down the grapevine is that there won't be a g92 based 8800GTS. the one w/the 112 stream processors is the revised 8800GTS.

again....that's only what i've heard.

I stepped up from a 7800GTX KO to a 7900GTX which I still use. I actually saved quite a bit of money that way, I got the new card for like 100 bucks or something like that. You do have to get on a waiting list though. I think it used to be an entire year since you bought the card that they gave you to step up, that must have changed, 90 days kind of sucks.

Nah. It's coming soon. I believe that it will it will hopefully be before christmas. But you probably won't be able to get it without going on a 'back-order' list. Here's one site from China where I read it but there are loads of other sites and forums that have been saying the G92 based GTS will be released soon.
