Vista internet connection

sometimes it works....sometimes it dosen't....now is one of those times when no matter how many times I restart or run diagnosis and tell it to refresh the IP, restart the network adapter, etc, it dosen't work.

I'm getting really tired of it, when it dosen't work I have to go into my open suse boot, which dosen't have video drivers installed (this is a topic for another fourm however)

does anyone know what could be the problem?
I was thinking drivers, but it works sometimes, so why woulden't it work other times?

btw, my internet provider is comcast, I get my connection thru a linksys router, and my ethernet adapter is the onboard of my asrock dual sataII motherboard.

my mobo is in my sig ..

basically if i use the Nvidia ethernet drivers from the Nforce (15.01) install package my ethernet will work until i reboot my machine then 2 out of 3 times i will lose my internet

device manager uninstall and reinstall and the internet is back

this has happened possibly a hundred times or more

last week i reinstalled the os (final time before i go back to XP) and just ran with the windows installed ethernet drivers and so far i have not once lost my net connection

so its very possible that its your drivers

I'm currently using Vista here on this computer, but, all of the others are using XP. We even have a couple of Macs using the connection from time to time. We also have a LinkSys Wireless Router and a LinkSys HUB to provide connections for all our rigs plus the ones I work on from time to time.

Additionally, we're using Comcast Cable and have been very happy with it. Of course, there are times when they do maintenance and we're down for a little while.

So, as for your situation, do you have other PCs onhand that you can verify that it's the connection to the Internet going down rather than a faulty NIC card on a particular PC?

Additionally, which modem did Comcast send you? Ethernet or USB? (I prefer Ethernet.) Do the lights on the modem show the disconnection? (I guess what I'm after is to confirm that Comcast is actually going down rather than something else inside your home.)

How long have you been using Comcast? If it's a fairly new connection, there may be a faulty switch on the line outside. We did have that intially and it was replaced.

We've also had one LinkSys router to go bad. (Even had others go bad before using BellSouth ADSL. )

So, mainly you need to determine exactly where the connection is breaking down.

when I go into device manager and find my ethernet adapter, it says drivers installed and working.

I would try updating, but I don't have a connection.
there is NOTHING wrong with my connection or Ethernet device.

I am typing this on the SAME COMPUTER that vista is having troubles on, only I am in my linux boot. so if linux can access the internet on this computer, vista should be able to also. we have a cable modem with ethernet, the ethernet cable goes to a linksys router which is where all 3 computers in my house get their connection, and all 3 computers are fine, but mine can only connect in linux, not vista. my computer is dual booted with vista and open suse 10.2 (linux), my moms computer runs windows XP, and the family computer runs ubuntu (linux)

none have any problems except for when I boot vista on my computer.

tl;dr- the connection is fine, I'm here on a linux boot on the same computer the vista is having the problem on typing this reply.

when the problem occur try manually enter DNS server IP addresses in your setting and see if it helps.
you might need to check with your ISP if you don't know the DNS server addresses.

There's you're problem, right there, same mobo as me, the only way I could get it to work was put the PC to sleep and then wake it up again, hey presto it works.

I got so tired of it I went out and bought a generic ethernet card, no problems now...

Sounds like Asrock need to update the Vista drivers for the onboard NIC.

They sure do, problem has been around since RC1, went away in RC2, then came back in the full retail...still no fix that I'm aware of

i had the same the pc says that all is working ok i just cant connect , i figured it was the firewall but had different ones and the same prob

so even though everything said ok nothing worked , uninstall reinstall and i was back

yeah, I booted vista up yesterday to play some call of duty 4 single player, and the internet worked
so I signed on aim, put an away message up, and played.
by the time I exited the game, I had no connection again.

but I found a new linux that works way better than my suse so im prolly just gona use this until I build my new computer in dec-january

I find that vista takes a good 15 seconds after logging-in to establish an internet connection with my router...

This is an issue I'm still trying to figure out myself. I've had plenty of Vista machines running on my network here at the shop, and some machines will work fine, while others won't (mine at home works flawlessly). Wired or wireless, it doesn't matter, and troubleshooting it is been a pain as it's never consistent. In my case I think it's because the router doesn't support the IvP6 protocol that Vista uses. In every instance that the Vista machine stops working on the internet it has been because it locked up my router (that means my whole network dies). You would think that simply disabling the listing would solve the problem, but it doesn't. Unfortunately, there is no update for this router as it was one of the earlier SMC g routers.

Couple things to try:

1) Try using a static IP on your computer. Be sure to pick an address within your routers DHCP listing (if the DHCP is from 192.168.2.100 to 2.200, use something in that range), use the routers address as your gateway address, and as your Primary DNS address listing too (otherwise you won't be able to get onto the Internet).

2) Try extending your DHCP lease time to 2 days, or to Forever. This is just to see if Vista isn't liking the fact that your router is releasing the IP.

3) Try connecting the computer directly to the modem, thus taking the router out of the equation. If it works, then you know where the problem lies.

4) Be sure you have the latest network card drivers installed from the manufacturer, and NOT by the motherboard manufacturers site. Usually the mobo guys drivers are older, and may not contain fixes to issues like this while the network card manufacturers website could have newer drivers that do.

In any case, I've gotten so tired of this issue that I've been using a different router for the last week, so if it happens again I'll know to look elsewhere for the problem.

I had this issue at home with my router locking up due to vista. I did 2 things that fixed it and am not sure which it was. I updated the firmware on my linksys wireless G router and i disabled IPv6 from my network cards. I am leaning toward the IPv6 disable as the true solution. Once i did this i have had 0 issues, but my network card is a marvell yukon and the drivers are updated for vista.
