30 days of pain for Halo 2

To moderators: Im not using cracks...just using the trial version 'leaked' links that Microsoft has provided to instal Vista....those three links are from windows market or something

Version 6.0.6000 (can ppl with vista post their versions ..... type "ver" in command prompt (cmd.exe))

I already have XP SP2 on C:....vista on another partition

First I installed : Windows Vista Ultimate

Installed ATi, Realtek, Nvidia restart

No crash yet.....but havent played anything

Installed
KB940105-x86(Hotfix for Games - Memory WDDM)
KB938194-x86(2MB Reliabililty Patch)
KB938979-x86(10MB Reliabililty Patch)

Alot of crashes in Windows itself, while browsing through file, during startup...after installing daemon tools...3 secs after mount BSOD

I decide to reinstall again.....

Format partition.....then install Windows Vista Starter over it

Installed ATi, Realtek, Nvidia restart

0X000008C
PAGE FAULT IN NONPAGED AREA 0X0000050

Put 2MB Reliablity Patch Windows6.0-KB938194-x86

Run Halo 2, while in menu:
0X000008E

After HAlo 2 BSOD restart - after system startup (green loading bars)
Restart again without BSOD

Put Hotfix Windows6.0-KB940105-x86

No crash yet....im writing above crap now....going to play Halo 2

Play Halo 2....two freezes...endtask restart twice

Start Halo 2 get error BSOD
DRIVER IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL
0X000000D1
tcpip.sys

I turn off User Account Control (or something) thru msconfig.....restart play halo 2....

I get an ATi BSOD....after that no windows BSODs....halo 2 just freezes every now and then.....

I get

DRIVER IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL
0X000000D1
dxgkrnl

while playing solitaire

No crack...nothing....i cant make it through the 30 day trial like this.....

I'm running Vista Home Premium, 32-bit and have it updated completely using Microsoft Updates...including the virtual memory patch.

I've played hours upon hours of Halo2 since installing Vista three weeks ago.

I've also just this past week upgraded from an ATI X1950 Pro 256 MB DDR2 video card to a VisionTek HD2600 XT 512 MB DDR3 video card.

I have FIVE HDDs installed, one DVD-RW, 2 GB of OCZ PC6400 Dual Channel RAM installed and the OS is installed on a 160 GB Samsung SATA HDD. (Yes, my profile needs updating. )

Other games I've played:

Oblivion, Fighter's Stronghold;
The Witcher;
FlatOut 2;
Crysis MP and SP Demo;
BioShock Demo;
Call of Duty 4 Demo;
F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate Demo;

and, others.

Looking at your system specs in your siggy, I'd take a good hard look at your PSU. Depending on the quality of that PSU....or lack thereof....that could be the very heart and soul of your problems with Vista.

Also, what kind of RAM timings are you trying to use? If you're running really tight timings on mixed bag RAM, you might be pushing too much. Loosen up the timings to see if things get better.

Have you also installed the motherboard chipset drivers for Vista?

Frankly, though, I would expect to have problems with a non-official copy of just about anything.

well my psu can handle 3dmark at 1600x1200 at full....non of the games (except Gothic and Spellforce 2) had problems....like Tomb Raider Legend...perfect....and many others....i mean if ur talkin about load like hdd, mobo, gfx altogether then i shuld have a similar problem in xp, right?

i had a 533 512RAM then i put a 1GB 677 ram together....then again in xp running occt mem ...no problems..

i have the package for nforce4 installed...i think its 15.01...can you tell me ur vista version and if ur comp came loadded with vista or not

No, I built my own system from scatch. I have XP SP2 on one of the HDDs and I bought Vista Home Premium 32-Bit OEM three weeks ago for $79.99 at Micro Center.

I get version 6.0.6000 when I do the CMD.EXE: VER as stated above.

I actually haven't even booted back into XP Pro SP2 since installing this except for maybe the first day or two. Since then, I've actually had a very good experience with Vista. There ARE still a few quirks, but, that's to be expected until SP1 is released.

I DID, however, have some problems with ROXIO burning software on my system. I uninstalled it as there was a .dll it installed that was causing some crashes.

You need to look closely at the Event Logs to see exactly what's causing the crashes.

Also, to say that certain hardware works well under XP doesn't mean it should also do so under Vista. It may very well be on the 'edge' of the threshold and Vista's requirements push it just over that edge.

Why don't you try unplugging anything except for just what you absolutely have to have and see if things work better?

I decided to go for ur power suggestion and changed appearance to Windows Classic and "adjusted for best Performance", then all i had to do was browse a little.....and then leave......after some time(5min idle)....system restart(BSOD).....crash.... restart again with Blue Screen(this is after the green bar loading thing).....and i didnt even touch the bloody computer......once in desktop....i waited for the crash and it came again....

0X0000008E

it says preparing disk and unlike most BSODs in vista it gets stuck....so i have to do press the reset button

btw...i just installed vista X64....and i did not install any drivers yet....perfectly stable.....i even ran OCCT for 5min (its enough to catch mos problems)....in vista and no crash.....this might be it......

i put in my headphones and i can hear a 1 sec interval low whine, as if the HDD is being read.....it corresponds to the red HHD LED......why?
