Hi folks,
Since no one here appears to know what is wrong with the wiki instructions for installing the latest ATi drivers for Feisty Ubuntu (method 2) and/or care, I did a little experimenting on my own. It seems that the first step should be to use the restricted driver manager in system>administration>Restricted Driver Manager to remove the restricted drivers. Then proceed with the rest of the instructions. After reboot revisit system>administration>Restricted Driver Manager and re-enable the restricted driver and reboot. You will now have the 8.39.4 driver as well as the control panel. If you use the 8.40.4 driver GoogleEarth won't work, although the command "glxinfo" shows DRI activated.
It does appears that the 8.40.4 drivers indeed won't work with GoogleEarth as reported by others, but the earlier 8.39.4 drivers do.
As I just happend to have the earlier drivers saved I just ran the commands with the references to 8.40.4 changed to 8.39.4 and succeded in installing the earlier version of the driver as well as the amdcccle control panel. Hope this helps folks that may have struggled with this issue.
BTW, it helps that I have a Partimage backup of my Feisty install. This allows me to experiment as much as needed with little or no pain.
Thanks.
