Memory Brand Help!

Hey guys Ive got an Inspiron 9100 with 1gig memory and an Ati mobility 9700 128meg. Looking to upgrade to 2 gigs and need some help with choosing a brand. Im leaning towards OCZ's pc3200 but some feedback would be appreciated. I am really into gaming and want to max this laptop out as much as i can. Also, does anyone know where i could find a mobility 9800 other than getting lucky on ebay?

you know that laptops use different mem from desktops right? try crucial.com. they make it fairly simple, price is right & mem is good.

a good brand name does not indicate quality of the RAM, it's not always indicate that you will be happy with your buy.
in general, whether you want a overclock grade RAM or not, some researching using internet resources for the product reviews is what you may want to consider doing, check the spec of RAM (you want to purchase) as advertised and presented by its maker or distributor, also check the DRAM components use in the production of the RAM. some overclock grade memory modules requires a much higher supply voltage than the others (and some are bad for your system's health), if you don't overclock your system you won't need/have to use an overclock grade memory modules.

also, in general, a high performance RAM with ultra-low latency memory module components needs more cleaner power than a basic and industry standard RAM,
so if the system power supply in use is not a good one, or it's not up to the job, you may have problem using the ultra-low latency timings, and/or without having to add extra voltages to your system in order to keep it stable.

and if you don't know what you are doing, go for something basic, if you want to keep the 1GB on the system and upgrade to 2GB, then looking for the same spec of RAM.
if you want to replace the existing RAM with a new set of 2GB, then like i said check the spec of the new RAM and its components, and review's.

i know you don't need no lecture from me either and just need a brand for your new RAM, but i just thought, that i give it to you anyway, lol.

Crucial, OCZ, Corsair, Gskill, and Mushkin are all good. The OCZ generally has low latency (2.5 vs. 3 for the others), but you probably won't notice that as the slowest module in your system is what all the memory will run at.

The OCZ at Newegg is a nice value, I agree with your pick of the PC3200 DDR 1gig module...

But, what is the speed of the present ram in your system - and are both slots full - and do you want/have to replace any, or all, or just add? You may be able to buy slower ram for less money, without hurting performance at all...

The ram currently is the factory Dell 2x512 modules at pc3200. I would like to replace with 2x1gig modules at low latency. Just need some opinions on brand.

swimtech pretty much nailed it. crucial are generally good compatible modules and you can get them at a reasonable price, so they would be at the top of my list.

I love Kingston, Cucial is my second choice. But whatever you do, stay away from G.Skill!
