Flash ad
The flash ad that's in the gaming section is annoying as hell. I wouldn't mind it if I didn't almost blow my damn cans..

I don't know if you are talking about the same, but the Zotac ad on the right seems to be the reason for the LONG delays in loading pages today. A page loads, but only one, has to wait 15-20 sec for the ad to load for the rest of the page to load. So for example the main forum page loads down to Gaming Discussion Arcade, and then have to wait.

Some would say there is a lesson to be learned here for using a mac.
Not me of course, that sucks man - ill get craig to take the ad apart and make it "mac G4 friendly" even if it means making it asci art.
**useless fact of the day--- did you know craig named himself craig5320 after his macintosh performa model number?**

Well this forum is riddeled with flash ads, and it slows page load times to 20 seconds. And that to me isn't acceptable. I've been on these forums on over 20 computers, and it does the same on all of them.
Granted, firefox seems to load a bit faster then IE7, but only slightly. IE7 20 seconds, yes I counted. FF 14 seconds. Yes I counted that as well.
I really wished that a donation system was put in place to disable ads. $3 bucks a month would be a decent price. Those who don't pay get ads. Those who do don't.
I know it's definatly doable, as Rage3D does it. (Yes I hate that site, especially with the new "leadership" - if you can call it that.)
Anyhow, I wished it could be an option.

Well I found something that might help. I use Peerguardian 2 and it not allowing to connect to some weird server (no ubi) was causing the delay. If I either disable PG2, or disable PG2, block the specific ad, then enable PG2, the pages load properly as before.
If the server blocked was ubi.com or something then I would allow it, but now, nah.

I often use PG2 since I like to *coughaquirecougemovies*. Your right it does load faster now.

I can't get more than one page to load here at a time now, using IE7 and not using PeerGuardian. Is it the Flash Ads causing this?

I'm ready to give up DH. I can barely browse on this site anymore. If I'm lucky enough to get the main forum page after I go make a coffee, I'm twice as lucky to get any of the topics I click on. No issues with any other sites....

yeah the site isnt wonderfully fast I know. We are however in the process of getting several really high end servers to power the site guys. I thought i had mentioned this in other threads however just so you all know there is a lot planned for the site this year.
A complete redesign and new fast servers.
Incidentally I would like to address the comments about advertisements a little, specifically the comparisons with Rage3d and "donations". Rage3d do NOT employ staff, we have to this point 10 people on full year salaries. As for donations, we had this before and the average total for monthly donations rarely reached $50. That would be enough to fund the bandwidth for a few days each month, if we didn't employ staff . This doesn't even include drivercleaner and our driver downloads site either. This network is not really a little "hobby project" anymore, hasn't been for quite some time.
So let me make it clear, I use this site as much as everyone and I know its not ideal right now, in fact it is quite often slow and frustrating and I understand your concerns, we are however going to get it resolved, so all I can do right now is ask for your patience.
Those of you who claim they are leaving due to this, well it is our loss and im sad to hear it, but I hope you come back when we get it resolved.
Thank you.

My custom title says it "flash banner hater"... I go "OH NO!" at sites which abuse javascript and DHTML (the infernal slide-in / slide up), I have falk adsolution and tribalfusion in my hostfile - killed as scum.
Some places fit the ads around the site, others fit the site around the ads.
As for speed, can be damn slow at some times, but I'm more inclined to blame my ISP's Cogentco links, as everything that goes that way seems to be pretty poor.
Leaving, not yet unless adblocking is a banning issue, but I'd drift away more than I have done already if I couldn't shoot all the crap, as I find DH seems to be leaving the mainstream behind.

I really am sorry to hear it. we are stuck right now between a rock and a hard place, as the upgrades are not cheap and will greatly benefit everyone, but we need ample finances to fund it.
All I can suggest is you use a faster loading theme like midnight heaven and block the ads.

Zardon, I honestly had no idea you guys actualy employed people here.
And as you know I mean no disrespect. It is annoying, but I will continue to handle it, because I happen to think this site is one of the best on the net. The quality of posts in your reviews alone makes this site kick ass. Not to mention the other stuff you do, like the gaming section, and now the Arcade. Not to mention the contests you have, etc.
I'll never leave the site, that's forsure.
I'm very happy to hear you guys have plans like that for the site. I'm looking forward to it.

Thanks man, we do our best. It is a great team we have here. Don't worry the directors running this site know exactly what is needed and we are organising the servers as we speak, then we will migrate over, as well as initiating a whole new site theme - the entire operation will take time, we have several teams behind the scenes organising the servers as well as coders working on site implementation - trust me, things behind the scenes right now are very active. We have a lot planned this year, and while we may not be able to cut down on the ads dramatically in the long term, we will make sure they serve as fast as possible as well as being relevant to you guys. I know ads are annoying however we do make sure they aren't lame dating ads or "smilie" ads.
To everyone reading this who has had frustration with slow load times recently, I honestly want to thank you personally for hanging around. Hopefully we can continue to deliver the content you want and improve on the user experience with the upgrades and ideas we will be implementing this year.
If anyone ever has any ideas or comments to pass on to us and wants to do so on a one to one basis, email me direct at zardon@driverheaven.net. I do try and answer everyone.
