Strange Codec Problems

Hello! Okay, I got a wierd problem with my codecs... Well particularly my DivX codec.

Now I have two systems, both with the same programs in general, except one has a video editing program (Sony Vegas). Now for my divX codecs, I use the k-lite basic pack. And on the PC without the Sony Vegas program, I can run videos fine via WMP11.

The other system with WMP11 can also play the vids but I always get the "seraching for codec" whenver I start the video. In addition, the Divx icon keeps on popping in and out in the taskbar and WMP11 isn't completely responsive (5-10 second delay)

I did try to install the normal DiVx files but still no go Help anyone?

I'd say it's because of the k-lite pack. Avoid these "codec-packs" at all costs, they only cause troubles. And if you install the original DivX over that pack it probably makes even more chaos in your system. I would remove the k-lite pack (sometimes it can be difficult to remove all the garbage these packs install) and the DivX codec and then install ffdshow. I'm using clsid's ffdshow tryouts build rev.906 - it is stable and it works flawlessly.

Definitely a big NO NO to install a codec pack plus & Divx. You may have to dump all of your codec support on the computer having the issue. Then re-install K-Lite or do what Roy says. Just remember to pay attention to what you're clicking on during the install.

Hmmmm that sucks... Well if anyone can show me a link or something that shows one how to clean a PC of all codecs and such, I'd be grateful (I'll google it later anyways but if somebody has it on hand, that's always helpful)

I found some some information about codec cleaning on Doom9's forum: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=122246
The program mentioned in that thread is here: http://paul.glagla.free.fr/filmerit_en.htm

I never used that program, but I hope it helps...
You may also try some registry cleaners like CCleaner or jv16 PowerTools.

Well, if you don't insist on using WMP try MPC: http://www.mytempdir.com/1242716
and ffdshow rev.906: http://downloads.sourceforge.net/ffd...7&big_mirror=0
Just make sure you uninstall as much codec-packs as possible, at least with their own uninstallers, and the official DivX too. And run some registry cleaner.
Good luck
